I thought I’d seen an accelerometer chip recently that retailed for $3-5, but the cheapest I can find on Digi-Key is $7-9. I’m really worried about the puck price climbing out of control. Anyone know of cheap accelerometers?

Alas, I’m afraid not. The accelerometer I’ve been using is the LIS3L02AS4 that Digikey sell; I suspect it’s the one you’ve been looking at.
I’m curious — why have you settled on a case rather than the joy of messing about with resin?
You can sample accelerometers from freescale… Delivery in 2-3 days…
I really like the MMA7260QT because it lets you chose from between 1.5g/2g/4g/6g using two pins…
Calle — I know I can sample chips, and I am already using samples in my prototype. But I want to find inexpensive parts for the puck so that other people, who can’t all be expected to sample all of their parts, can afford to build one too.
Ms Jaye, sorry to be so slow in responding to your question about case versus resin. Partly I’ve been busy with the holiday break, but partly I wanted to take the time to give you as thorough an answer as possible.
I think it comes down to this:
But . . . there’s nothing to stop you from assembling puck guts and casting them in resin, if you were interested. If you do, I’d love to see how it comes out!
